Airport rules: Were you stopped by customs officials at the airport for the golden jewelry you wear? Was your old jewelry confiscated from customs after your return to India? If this has happened, there is a relief for you. The Delhi’s Supreme Court has instructed the customs department not to confiscate the old and personal jewelry of passengers that come to India and not to bother them. The court said that passengers at airports should not have unnecessary problems. This arrangement was granted after complaints about the seizure and harassment of jewelry that was worn during travel.

    Instructions to the customs department

A bank of Justices Pratibha M Singh and Rajnish Kumar Gupta gave the customs officials clear instructions not to behave with Indian passengers and foreign tourists. The court gave this decision when the customs department announced that the central committee for indirect taxes and customs (CBIC) is still working on changes in the rules and takes more time.

    What was going on?

This decision took place during the hearing of more than 30 petitions in which the passengers had complained about the customs officials who had confiscated their luggage and jewelry. The petents said that customs officials confiscated jewelry without a solid reason and bother the passengers.

Passengers should not be stopped unnecessarily

The court instructed the customs officials to strictly follow this arrangement. The court said that if the rules are not changed by the next hearing, a standard operating process (SOP) should be carried out by May 19. It is implemented until the new rules.

What will the new rules be?

The customs department said that the CBIC discussed the matter with the stakeholders and creates new rules. However, the court made it clear that the customs officials, until the new rules were made, cannot confiscate the jewelry carried or used by the passengers.

    Relief for passengers

After this decision, the passengers will get great relief. Especially those who come from abroad and wear their personal jewelry. They are not stopped unnecessarily now. The court also decided that if the rules are not changed by May 19, a temporary guideline will take place so that passengers have no problems.
