For the first time since 2009, Sporting Kansas City will play under new leadership.
If you organize St. Louis City on Saturday evening, SKC will be operated by long -time co -trainer Kerry Zavagnin. Sporting (0-5-1, 1 point) separated from Peter Vermes on Monday after the team lost 2-1 at FC Dallas on March 29.
The release of Vermes really marked the end of an era. He was not only the longest coach in MLS at the age of seven, but he was also one of the longest coaches in the world.
However, Sporting KC has fallen into difficult times in the past four years. Kansas City has been in the Western Conference in the last 13 games in all competitions that go back by last year, no more than eighth place. The group’s group even demanded that Vermes resign on Sunday.
“One of the most difficult things I have ever done,” said team co-owner Mike Illig about Canning Vermes. “It was brutal. It was a difficult moment. It was difficult and a hard conversation. … it was understood why it was had.”
Illig said he would do a worldwide search for the next coach, but also said Zavagnin that the job is “losing his”.
During Sports KC, St. Louis City (2-2-2, 8 points) are looking for goals. They were hidden in the last two games, including a 1-0 home accident against Austin FC on Sunday.
St. Louis granted only two goals this season – the lowest number in MLS – but only achieved four, three of them in a win on March 9 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Coach Olof Mellberg said that it is essential for his team to find ways to bring the ball into the net.
“We only failed in the last third,” he said after the loss against Austin. “I think you could see that. I think we have created enough opportunities as a team. We had many entries in the last third.”
Good news for St. Louis on Saturday evening is the return of midfielder Eduard Lowen to the starting line -up. Lowen was suspended for the Austin FC game after deserving a red card on March 22nd in a 1-0 defeat in Philadelphia.
